Our favourite part of the property is the garden.

You will discover various shrubs and plants here which attract beneficial pollinators to the garden, such as Buddleias, Choisya, Viburnum, Forsythia, Ceanothus, Wisteria, Weigela, Mahonia, also Clematis and honeysuckle to name but a few. The pollinating insects are particularly drawn to the beautiful flowers of the Verbena, Lavendar, Erysimum Bowles Mauve, passionflower, flowering Ivy, Holly, Heathers, Sedum and Fennel which grow throughout the garden.  For food, shelter and nesting areas for the birds there are Conifers, Box Hedging, Laurel and newly planted Hornbeam Hedging. In two of the fields there are wildflowers such as Knapweed, Nettles, Birds Foot Trefoil, Yarrow, Hawkbit, Sheeps Sorrell and various grasses which are the larval foodplants for many of the different species of butterfly and moth that visit the garden regularly throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn.

In the vegetable garden we have a 30ft x 15ft Polytunnel, which extends our growing season and has an automatic watering system which can be attached to the garden tap with a timer; especially handy for when you need to be away from home for any length of time and you have produce that needs regular watering. We have successfully grown 15 different varieties of tomato in the tunnel, plus sweet peppers, chilli peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, garlic, melons, okra and the more delicate herbs of French Tarragon and Basil.   There are also several raised vegetable beds, some in the vegetable garden itself, some in other parts of the garden, in which we have grown enormous onions, plus potatoes, sweetcorn, beetroot, spring onions, squashes, celery, broad beans, runner beans, courgettes, peas, celeriac, shallots, radishes, lettuces, several varieties of carrot and parsnips.  We also have a dedicated herb patch where we grow rosemary, thyme, marjoram, mint, oregano, chives, parsley and sage, plus there are a couple of mature bay trees for a regular supply of the leaves for cooking.

For fruit lovers we have plenty of soft fruits growing, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, black and red currants and a thornless blackberry.  There are some mature apple trees and peach trees in the orchard, plus some newly planted apple, pear, nectarine, plum and cherry trees.  We also have a fantastic mature walnut tree that produces many walnuts each year.

There is a well in the garden that has a submersible pump which feeds one of the larger water butts by the greenhouse; which we also use for growing tomatoes, cucumbers and melons, and which incorporates a potting shed area.  There are many water butts placed throughout the gardens which means there is always water to hand for the flowers and vegetables.

Detached house with gîte, beautiful gardens, paddocks and outbuildings

This property offers further potential to extend in to the adjoining garages if required, subject to obtaining the necessary planning permission. The gîte is rented out for 60€ per night.  The layout of the garden and paddocks give a very pleasant outlook from the property.  The property benefits from double glazed windows and the majority was re-wired in 2006.  The accommodation is very versatile and would lend itself to either generating an additional income or for a relative or teenager.  Viewing is recommended.

The property is situated in a peaceful position in a rural hamlet on a small lane near to the Mortainais forest, within easy access of both the historic market town of Mortain and the small town of Ger and Beauchêne. Barenton and Ger are about 4 km from the property and the busy town of Flers is a 20 minute drive. Mortain is a thriving market town where excellent shopping facilities, restaurants and bars are available. It is situated in the southwest of Normandy, near the borders of Manche and Calvados.  The beaches on the west coast are an hour’s drive away and the property  is approximately 80 minutes drive from the port of Caen and an hour and forty minutes from Cherbourg. The D-Day landing beaches and the Mont St Michel are about an hour’s drive away.   The Lac de la Dathée, ideal for walking, fishing and boating, and an 18 hole golf course are within 20 minutes drive,  as is the Saint Sever forest.
