The well placed town of Gorron is in the department known as the Mayenne which is part of the Pays de la Loire region. It is just across the border from Normandy and is a very popular area for many non-French nationals. It is perfectly placed insofar as it is not too far to the medieval city of Fougères, the major town of Mayenne and Laval not to mention the wonderful city (but with a village vibe) of Rennes.
Rennes is often voted as one of the most sought after places to live in France. It is a highly populated student town with two universities but is suitable for all ages. Walk its cobbled streets and admire its Tudor style architecture and you could easily forget you are in a city. Rennes also has flights back to Gatwick with the operator EasyJet.
Returning to the town of Gorron, its own community Facebook page describes Gorron as “the most sporty town in the Pays-de-la-Loire region. 2700 inhabitants. All the services of a town in the countryside.”
This is because it has everything to offer anyone with a keen interest in sport – be it adult or child. There is a tennis court, football field, areas for judo, rock climbing wall, indoor sports eg badminton, volleyball, football, table tennis and a gym to work out in. To top it all, they even have a swimming pool.
Just a short drive out of Gorron to Colmont you will find an amazing outdoor activity centre that has Paintball, Acrobranching, Laser Quest, Kayaks, Canoes, Mini Rafts and Mountain Biking. We feel that Gorron’s community page is well within its right to claim that it is the most sporty in the region! There is something for everyone.
For those of you that would like to immerse yourself into French culture, why not pop down to Le Boulodrome which has 21 indoor courts and and 48 outdoor courts. It also has a theatre that seats over 900 and all amenities that you would come to expect from a larger town such as this.
To add to its extensive list you have a Bank, Post Office, English style Butchers, English style tea room, Creperie, Boulangeries, Tattoo Parlour, Brocante, Supermarket, Restaurants, Bar Tabac’s, Garden Centre and Dog Kennels. You can really do everything in this town.
For families, this town has a nursery school, primary school and college and lots of activities. As the children get older they are also able to access High schools nearby in the Mayenne.
There is a river (The Colmont) which crosses the town and you will find lots of hiking trails in and around the town. It is perfect mix of countryside but also town living.
For those looking to seek more countryside activities why not head to the Menhir de la Roche – you can park at La Rocher and walk along the stream, through some woods, over a bridge and visit a historic monument that is over 4,000 years old.
We hope you enjoyed this little insight into Gorron.
