Another pretty medieval town that we sell in and around is Ambrières-les-Vallées which is situated in the Mayenne department of the Pays de la Loire region. It has approximately 2,500 inhabitants and can be found just over 20km north of Mayenne which we have also written about here. It was founded in the 11th century and fortified by that famous Normand, William The Conqueror.
The river Varenne runs though Ambrières-les-Vallées which makes it a perfect holiday location, second home or indeed a permanent home, as there are many activities that you can enjoy on the river eg kayaking, canoeing and other water sports. There is also the barrage, which is a central meeting point for all the keen hikers and walkers amongst you, whereby you can follow the many planned routes in the local area. The town itself is split into two – one side being on the hilltop and the other being on the river. This makes it ideal to zip line from the top to the bottom during the summer – yes you read that correctly! What a great idea and one that makes for quite a sight whilst you wander around enjoying what the town has to offer. That is, of course, if you are not already on the zip line!
As you would come to expect there are local amenities within the town – bars, snack bars, mini supermarket and restaurants where you can watch the world go by, relaxing down by the river. For the motorhome and campers amongst you, there is an aire for camping cars and a camping site. You will also be able to go horse riding and play mini-golf. There is something for everyone in this pretty town.
For those of you, who would like to indulge in a bit of history, there is a quaint textile museum which is worth a visit.
In the activity park there is an outdoor pool, water sports, cabins to get changed in and a small bar serving light meals. In the next village, only 5 minutes away in La Haie-Traversaine, there is a water sports activity park which has a large inflatable play area on the river, set on a man made beach with pedlos. It also has a café and a snack bar area.
