A Day Out In Deauville

Deauville makes for a wonderful day or weekend out and is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes from our base here in Sourdeval, Lower Normandy. However, depending where you buy in Normandy, you could find yourself in the enviable position of living closer!  It is situated in the Calvados department of Normandy and its neighbour, Trouville-Sur-Mer, is in competition to see which town is the most chic. You will have to make up your own mind as to which wins this particular prize!

In fact, you could even make a weekend break of it from Calais. In 3 hours you will find yourself in what can only be described as the glamorous Cannes of the North. It even has its own American film festival which has been in existence since 1975. You cannot fail to notice this fact with the names of various film stars and Directors, which are paid homage to on the planches outside the cabines (beach huts), which line the beautiful decked promenade on the sandy beach front.

Normandy Tourism says of Deauville and its film festival..

“Cinema has been intrinsically linked to the picturesque seaside resort of Deauville, ever since the release of the French film ‘A man and a woman’, written and directed by Claude Lelouch in 1966. Extremely popular at the French box office, this film put Deauville in the international spotlight especially thanks to the love scene shot in the Hotel Barrière Le Normandy. It also led to the creation of the Deauville American Film Festival. Since then, every American movie star and celebrity to visit Deauville has become a part of the town’s identity, with the many Art Deco changing cabins lining Deauville’s famous boardwalk each bearing a Hollywood star’s name.”

They mention glamour and it certainly is the place to be if you want to see individual, unique and stunning villas that are dotted all over Deauville. The local Real Estate Agents will soon give you an indication that you will need in excess of one million euros to buy anything near the beach front. If you are a car enthusiast, you will see very expensive makes of cars such as Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin and more besides. It is safe to say that the well to do live and escape to Deauville but equally, you will not feel out of place amongst the jet set. It has a relaxed and friendly air to the place and you will feel very much at home strolling the Promenade des Planches. This is the most visited area mentioned above, where you will see all the various names of well known film stars and directors.

Unsurprisingly, Deauville is home to casinos where any dress attire is welcome as are people from all walks of life. The hotel Barrière sits prominently  (alongside other 5 star hotels) over looking the Promenade des Planches and if you have a room with a sea view, you could not be better placed. The hotel is magnificent inside, with art deco furnishings and a cosy deep red interior. The hotel has a real nostalgic feel to it and, on the ground floor if you are heading for a spa treatment, you will see the corridor wall full of the rich and famous that have stayed in this wonderful hotel. It also has an outdoor swimming pool if you can drag yourself off the beach front of course!

Deauville is also home to a race course that naturally, only being a short drive from Paris, is where all the best trainers, thoroughbred horses and jockeys meet. It opens for a month long meet in August and the entry price is, surprisingly, very inexpensive compared to that of the UK eg Aintree, Cheltenham – so if you are a horse lover you will not be disappointed.

Whilst we have spoken about its obvious wealth it also has an understated seaside resort about it. It is perfect for a romantic getaway. You could sit around the harbour side and go into the many seafood bars where you can pick and choose your platter and maybe wash it down with a glass of champagne or too. Take a stroll hand in hand along the beach front and stop for a coffee, drink or spot of lunch and watch the world go by or simply take a crepe or ice cream to go. You will find the 1920s decor is evident everywhere and there is a real charm to the place. If you are feeling romantic then this would be an optimum place to propose and stay at La Barrière! The hotel’s restaurant is exceptional as well as the waiting staff who will make your stay that extra special.

Just up the road from Deauville you have the pretty port of Honfleur and the stunning seaside resort of Cabourg. You will not be short of things to see and do that is for sure.

We hope you enjoyed this little insight into Deauville and can visit this very special place soon.
